According to a lawyer for the family members of the June 12 Air India crash victims, two families in the UK received the incorrect remains. According to sources, Air India had nothing to do with the confusion and the remains were sent in sealed coffins by a government hospital in Ahmedabad. According to India, victims were identified following established procedures.

According to the attorney for the victims of the Air India crash in the UK, at least two of their families received the incorrect bodies. According to Indian sources, the airline was not involved in the confusion and the bodies were sent in sealed coffins following DNA testing by a government hospital in Ahmedabad. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the bodies were identified in accordance with established standards, and the remains were handled with respect for the deceased’s dignity.
A lawyer from Keystone Law, who is defending the families, told India Today TV that the remains of the crash victims were misidentified and transported to the UK.
According to the lawyer, the confusion was discovered when the London coroner tried to match the DNA of the deceased to confirm their remains.
“The coroner informed one family that the coffin held the body of an unidentified individual and not their relative’s,” the attorney said, forcing the family to postpone their funeral arrangements.
According to the attorney, the remains of both victims were interred in the same coffin and given to another family along with the remains of another traveler.
The attorney told India Today TV that “the family had to get the remains of the two passengers separated before carrying out the funeral of their family member.” “One family discovered they had received the incorrect remains and was left without anyone to bury.”
241 people were killed when the Gatwick-bound AI171 crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12. According to a BBC report, 53 British nationals were among those killed in the plane crash.
According to the Daily Mail, twelve passengers’ mortal remains were sent to the UK, while the funerals of several British citizens were held in India.
The MEA emphasized that the remains were handled with appropriate consideration for the deceased’s dignity and that all accepted standards were adhered to in the identification of the air crash victims.
India Responds to Reports on the Remains of AI Crash Victims
The claims made by attorneys for the British victims’ families were first published in the UK’s Daily Mail.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal responded to the Daily Mail report on the Air India crash by saying, “We have seen the report [on wrong remains] and have been working closely with the UK side from the moment these concerns and issues were brought to our attention.”
India stated that it was collaborating with the UK on the matter and that all established technical requirements were met in the identification of the Air India crash victims’ bodies.
“The relevant authorities had identified victims in accordance with established protocols and technical requirements following the tragic crash,” Jaiswal stated.
“Every mortal remains were handled with the highest professionalism and respect for the deceased’s dignity. We are still collaborating with the UK government to resolve any issues pertaining to this matter,” he continued.
AHMEDABAD CIVIL HOSPITAL’S DNA TESTS
Given that the majority of the bodies were irreparably burned, the remains were given to the families following DNA testing at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.
According to sources who spoke to India Today Digital, Air India played no part in the transfer other than assisting the grieving families and transferring the remains to the next of kin in sealed coffins from the government hospital.
According to the source, “Air India’s agency, Kenyons International Emergency Services, assisted the grieving relatives in the process while the Ahmedabad hospital called the relatives for DNA samples and gave them the sealed coffins.”
The attorney told India Today TV that an investigation had been requested into the matter and that “we are working on establishing the chain of events about how the bodies of the passengers were recovered and identified.”
